Trend Alert: Dress Shirts, Maxi dresses, Pleated Skirts and High Heels For Men

By  |

Gender fluidity in style is no longer a thing for only women, but men too. Thom Browne, an American designer seems to think men should embrace the trend too and rock a few pieces ‘borrowed from the girls’. His spring summer collection presented at the ongoing Men’s fashion week had a slew of dress shirts, tunics, maxi dresses and skirts all worn with pointy toe heels.

Who says what a man should and shouldn’t wear? The collection seems to drive a conversation many of us never what to have.d And, if a woman can wear a pantsuit, why can’t a man wear a skirt suit? Probably, this is what the designer wanted to us to talk about.

However if he really wanted men to dress like this, trust me very soon a gentleman is going to show up to work carrying a briefcase but dressed in a skirt suit and platform heels. And, they’ll probably attend a board meeting or two.

Skirts and dresses for men aren’t a new thing. Celebrities such as Asap Rocky, Jaden Smith and Kanye West have been snapped a couple of times dressed in clothes ‘borrowed from the girls’.

This is what the designer had to say when he got quizzed about his thoughts on the collection.

“All of it is being offered. I think it looks amazing, it’s definitely not for everyone, but if I were to see somebody walking down the street in that I would want to know who that person is.”

See looks from the collection and share thoughts on if men should embrace this new trend. Sound off in the message box below.

It’s not even a good look. I’m sorry but most women want their man to look manly not womanly. The only one that looked at all decent was the Scottish kilt looking one but even that one wasn’t as manly as the real kilts!

You do not speak for most women. You speak for yourself and possibly the select few you keep in your inner circle.

      Get over yourself.

I am a woman`s Fashion Designer and I want to say this, first I am all man I like making clothes for women, period. I have never liked dressing men I am not good at it. I do not like what men smell like, okay we got that straight right?

Now, the shoe idea I like but the style did not do it for me, yet, fashion history told us men wore high heels long before women did, the Royals used high heels, they also wore highly decorated dresses and jewelry including earrings and were well made up, complete with lipstick and gloss.

Suits, as we know them today, were clothes the poor peasants wore because that is all they could afford, a shirt, pants and a jacket.

Honestly, I did like more than one or two of the designs, but I would not wear all of them because they are not good enough. I think the models were also not good enough because they too are the same prototype of men who wear normal silly clothes.

Whenever I dress in my original designs women cling to me and I like that, men who wear baseball hats scorn me.

Most men will never wear the clothes I wear, and these clothes are not all male either, but the women go nuts over the clothes.

Most men do not know how to dress, they do not have many choices, pants, a shirt, a vest, a jacket and a tie, those are the choices, in stripes, solids or to a lesser extent squares.

Men can buy the best labels they like the clothes are simply all the same, boring, worthless and not fashionable at all.

This is why I do not make men`s clothes, then the men pick on the hems, and the cuffs and the length of the jacket and the jacket.

The manner in which the bottom 2.5 inch outside hem was placed told to make the designer has problems with style, the designer has to be male, choosing the ugliest of male fabrics to make a trashing down of traditional otherwise boring men`s clothing originally fashioned for office work, a take-off prototype of traditional-ugly men`s clothes.

I am not saying the designs are ugly, they are unusual and I like that. I would modify some of the stuff, and incorporate them into other more feminine looking men`s looks.

Hot women like men who are enough feminine, but can ravish them in bed, and look like a million dollars on the streets as far as the clothes go, men of poor taste cannot wear nice clothes.

I would give the designer points for wanting to change the way men look and I know that the clothes men wear are evolving because certain men are getting tired of wearing and competing with the same uniforms all of their lives.

It may take time for women and men to get accustomed to a change in look, from the overused boring prototype clothes men have been cursed to wear since the middle of the last century, women get to wear all the nice things and we simply get the garbage looks.

Like this designer, I also want to change that and I do it with my personal wardrobe. What I found was that the poorer the people the less taste they have for innovative looks in clothes, the baseball hat is missing.

I see men take their beautiful women to Paris and dress in a baseball hat twisted, and that is the apex of his fashion statement.

Rock on mister designer, bring it on, fix it, make it look less male and more universal, change the cloth, do away with the prototype structure and closed-end lines, chose me who love life to wear these clothes, keep on you will do well.

God, I am so glad I don’t live in your world. What an absolute travesty it must be to be so heavily invested in things that matter so little. God, the layers of insulation you have between your existence and concerns of actual consequence, it must be suffocating. You poor bastard.

I dont care what these mentally ill people want to try and convince people of, but only two!! Gender is not a feeling its biology. The left say they believe in science, but try to feel a gender?? Uhhh, O.K.. If you have a penis your a man. If you have a vagina your a woman. Is that simple enough for your simple mind. If that still doesn’t work for you, then go have a DNA test. All they need is a tiny drop of blood. And it will definitively tell you if your a man or woman. Just cause in your minds eye you think your something else, doesn’t make it so in the real world.

        • Biologist Barry

          October 2, 2017 at 2:48 am

What do you do with people who have a different genetic makeup, such as xxy chromosomes? Are they a man or a woman? What do you do with people who have both sets of genitalia? Even if you want to brush aside what people are experiencing on a non tangible level, it’s not as simple as you would have us believe.

Some of the faces of the models are classic. I can hear the voice in their heads saying “I need the money. I need the money”.

Are any of you aware of fashion history? From many of the answers, it would appear not.

Being ignorant of how fashions have changed and flowed between the two standard genders as being “acceptable” is one thing. The outright fear of things not understood, and therefore hated being laid bare? That’s a far more worrying ignorance to display.

From a fashionista’s point of view ” I love it”, you have to be a very confident man to wear those heels. The attire is very fashion forward but the heels I don’t agree with. I would pair the collection with some Adidas or saddle shoes. “I welcome creativity”….

I personally love the style for me (a women). Unfortunately, I only know 3 men that could even carry this look off. From an objective point of view, the line looks a bit too restrictive in the movement of the cloths on the models. As for the shoes, I would totally order them in all colors available, but that’s just me. This isn’t the 70’s and men are not used to wearing heels anymore. The models looked a bit off-balance in them.

Pfff, I was rocking some of those looks long before they became trendy, also, whom decides what clothing we as individuals can wear? True that some of those are not very flattering but some are. Men do not look good in fitted skirts or dresses, knee length pleated skirts are more flattering and utilitarian.
Those of y’all whom want men to “dress like men” need to tell the ladies to dress like women, as in stop wearing pants.
Really though, wear what you want and be damn those that would say otherwise.

  54. Christine

    October 9, 2017 at 1:52 pm

Since when do knee-high socks go with high heels? Hideous, especially with the white stripes

As for the outfits they’re all gross, what about the man that looks like he’s got a quarter of a suit jacket over top of another jacket.
Did the designer purposely make the Jacket sleeves way too short for the models? Is this often happens with male models who are 6 foot two because of their extra long arms.
One things for sure, I got a good laugh over this.

I can’t imagine men wanting to wear clothes that Look so uncomfortable! The shoes while appealing could never be worn for long periods of time, ask any woman! The long shirts I do like but they remind me of those worn in middle eastern countries by men with pants beneath. That would be acceptable to me. The added feminine flair of the design over all is off putting on a man and not terribly stylish for a woman.

I like the concept but personally didn’t like most the pieces. The outfit in 2 and 14 I think would have been great if not for the shirt dress underneath and with plain black knee high socks. I thanks its totally sexist to say men should look like men, they should look however they want. But ya…cool idea, failed at final product

I just want to see the actual sales sheet for this line of clothing, if it’s ever produced.

“Well, Mr… Thom Browne, was it? It’s been a year, and it appears we’ve sold five units globally of your new clothing line. And yes, as it happens all five outfits were purchased by Buzzfeed so they make a trite video about genderfluid fashion trends for men. Given, however, that no men are actually buying these abominations, and therefore this does not constitute a trend of any sort, I’m afraid we’ll have to drop you as a client because you’re completely delusional and we were idiots for ever going along with your ridiculous ideas. But, when we donate these unsold articles to the poorest people of Somalia, perhaps we’ll see your gay little fad take off over there. Good day.”

I think Thom, like all the other designers should wake up! What self respecting man would wear this. I mean, it looks like dude forgot to put on pants!

You want to get a trend going?? You want to help those of us that want men’s skirts and the such to become commonplace?? Then pay attention. Most men are afraid of what designers are trying to get us to accept. We are men. Werther we are wearing a skirt or slacks, we still want to look like men!

Consider this. A man walks into a department store and sees
a mannequin dressed in a ball cap, flannel shirt and a skirt made in denim to completely resemble a pair of men’s jeans except in a 21″ aline, you just might get his attention. Mainstream baby! Design unbifurcated garments that look like they are made for MEN! PLEASE!
